Writers' Block Magazine

The latest edition of Writers’ Block, the school’s literary magazine, has been published. Designed, edited and partially written by our Year 10 students, it showcases the best writing talent in our school. The magazine contains contributions submitted by pupils from across all years for both in-school (Schooldo, Valentine’s Day, House Writing) and out-of-school competitions (“Child Soldier” competition). The magazine is a way to celebrate the literary talent of our pupils and a means to encourage anyone with a passion for writing to join in.

A Welcome Message from the Head

Dear Reader

A very warm welcome to the King Edward VI Handsworth school website! I hope you will absorb some of our school's special atmosphere. May I extend an invitation to visit us in person; we are always happy to show you around.

Academic achievement at the highest levels is at the heart of this school and girls are given every opportunity to succeed. Excellent teaching, wonderful resources and enthusiastic learners are a powerful combination.

Are you looking for a school for your daughter? There is much evidence to suggest that single sex schools enable girls to realise their full academic potential and achieve excellent results. This is certainly true of our school.

In an 11-18 school such as ours, Sixth-Formers are an important asset, they attract some of the most able teachers. Equally important is their role in helping and guiding the younger girls, who, in turn, develop leadership skills as they mature. We offer a number of places in our sixth form each year.

We want our pupils to be active members of the school community. We provide many opportunities for involvement in extra-curricular activities including music, sport, fund raising for charity and a variety of subject related activities. There are also opportunities for travel abroad and for day visits in the West Midlands and beyond.

Above all, I believe that we develop well-educated young women who are capable of independent thought. By exercising integrity and respect for others, I hope that they are able to influence the ever-changing world in which we live.

Finally, I would encourage you to read our latest OFSTED report. For the fourth time in succession we have been graded 'Outstanding' and this time we have all 38 measures with top grades, a record we believe to be unique in the West Midlands.

Yours sincerely

Dr. E V Insch OBE
Headmistress
