Geography

Why study Geography?

Geography has a critical function in developing the understanding of the world and how humans interact with their surroundings.

In the geography department students are taught a wide and varied curriculum building on both contemporary issues and changes that have taken place in the human and physical environments in the past.

We want to encourage students to question the global changes around them and for them to begin to shape their own future by taking ownership and responsibility for the world in which they live.

Crucially, geography at the school looks at a variety of places and draws upon the experiences of the students and applies new knowledge and understanding for their future experiences.

KEY STAGE THREE
Students at key stage three are encouraged to make comparisons with their local area and the department aims to prepare the girls for their future studies, in particular the department progressively uses thinking skills.

KEY STAGE FOUR
We recognise that every student has different learning needs and we therefore use a range of teaching and learning styles to ensure that every student has the opportunity to share their own opinions and learn in a variety of styles which suits their individual learning needs.

KEY STAGE FIVE
At key stage five the students look at the management of the natural and human world and the interaction between them, looking in particular at hazardous environments, globalisation, superpowers, security and development.
