Design and Technology

Design and Technology is a subject that will enable you to expand and build upon your current knowledge and skills about materials to solve challenging practical problems. It will involve you in identifying needs, generating ideas, planning and making and testing to find best solutions.

You will work, be taught and assessed through one material area of your choice. These are :-

  • Food technology
  • Textiles

Assessment is by:

  • 40% weighting a written examination
  • 60% weighting coursework – a single project consisting of
    1. a product you have made
    2. a concise design folder

Food Technology

The coursework involves a lot of practical work and this carries more marks than the designing aspects. In food technology you will learn about the development of food products and how to use and combine different ingredients. Students enjoy taking food technology because it combines practical activity and experiences with design, product and sensory analysis, nutrition, health and safety. The lessons are usually fast and active but satisfying in that you have achieved a desirable product at the end.

Textiles

The coursework is a free choice, but most girls usually choose to make a garment. A design folder accompanies the practical work. There is now a recommended maximum of 20 sheets of A3 for this. The examination is set as a design problem, which you will have to work through on the paper. Most girls seem to enjoy this course. There is plenty of opportunity for creativity and development of skills. The practical results often give a real sense of achievement.
